GAS HYDRAULICS
This app calculates the flow rate of natural gas utilizing the three most common flow equations used in the gas pipeline industry. These equations were developed for long pipelines in turbulent flow. These equations should not be used in short lengths of pipe or for low flow rate conditions.
The Weymouth Equation
The Weymouth was developed in 1912. This equation is generally used in 12” or smaller pipelines.
The Panhandle A Equation
The Panhandle A equation was developed under the auspices of the Gas Processors Suppliers of America (GPSA) in the 1940s. This is a general purpose equation.
The Panhandle B Equation
The GPSA refined the Panhandle A equation in 1955, resulting in the Panhandle B equation. This equation is generally accepted as the most accurate of the three.
The app is pre-populated with typical natural gas properties, typical pipeline pressures and temperatures. These values can be changed by touching the appropriate field. Once the configuration data has been entered, the calculated results are shown in the last of the three screens in this app.
The gas compressibility factor Z is derived from the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state.
